Reinforce Trusses Roof

In reality you can do more harm than good by altering a truss and completely changing the stress and tension points on the truss. The horizontal bottom chords of most garage trusses are designed to carry the weight of drywall and insulation. Usually trusses are put 24 inches apart. If you don t have an a frame roof you can run parallel boards between the studs to further offer support and to strengthen the frame.

Since only 2 of the roof is open at this point it s easy to cover for the night or for weather. Space them four inches apart along the edges and six inches apart in the middle of the plywood sheathing. To hold them up until the decking of the roof is placed on top a 12 foot 1 inch by 4 inch piece of lumber is used. Put on the adhesive as you would caulk.

It can be nailed temporarily to each truss as the next truss is put in place. The first step is to remove the fascia and about 2 of the roof sheathing right above it. Of stuff on it. Then slide floor joists in along side and in between each truss from 24 o c.

Jack up the centre of the trusses then reinforce each bottom chord with a 2x4 that spans the entire width of the garage. When all the trusses are installed and the first row of decking is on this brace is removed. My best advice would be to not alter the truss at all. Simply take 2 diagonal pieces and place them between the trusses.

That means you could lay a 2 x 4 ft. Apply construction adhesive along the edge of the truss to strengthen the connection to the plywood roof deck. Your framing proposal is of no help. So if your ceiling is unfinished you have some excess carrying capacity up there.

Is a safe estimate. It pretty common for people to think that their reinforcement of a truss will somehow make it better or stronger. Use wood adhesive underneath the sheathing along the connecting joint with the roof trusses. Jack up the centre reinforce as above and also replace any wood strapping with steel mending plates hurricane ties etc leave it as is strap up drywall pray to the gods.

Connect roof sheathing to the roof framing with ten penny weight common or eight penny weight ring shank nails.
