I believe this tools are not design for this purpose. For creating complex roof it might be easier if you create separate roof then use join roof tool to join them later. This makes the roof line visible in the plan view but the lines appear as solid lines. In the view properties expand the underlay drop down and select the level on which the roof was created to display as an underlay.
