So if you mine a roof that has already collapsed it re collapses and kills you immediately.

A roof tile that is 4 tiles to the east and 4 tiles to the north of a support pillar will not collapse as it is squareroot 4 2 4 2 5 66 tiles away from it which is less than 6 tiles. Wait for a pawn to remove it or select a constructor pawn and right click the area to instruct him to do it right away. Any roof tile that is at a 6 tile distance away or more from the nearest support will collapse. This means that the largest square room you can have is 10x10 internal.

You can add a couple of walls on the corners to make it safer from roof collapse. A roof will collapse if the last supporting wall or rock is removed whether by mining deconstruction or destruction. So this took out 4 people. For diagonal distances just apply the pythagorean theorem.

It ll only take 5 resources to build since roofs don t cost anything and it ll be a good enough starter storage. Roof collapses cause injuries to colonists and damage items. The company is reprocessing mining waste to extract lithium which can be used in rechargeable batteries. They will remove it like any other roof.

What can i do about this. When i say add in i meant not dig that area though you can add in the supports stone or metal before the hole reaches critical size. Any square 9 x 9 or bigger should have 1 support right in the middle. You didn t mine out a mountain you mined out a hill.

Use the planning tool to mark out your planning mining and add in the support columns based on the size of the hole you ll be leaving. So i try to remove the mountain roofs so they don t collapse by declareing a no roof area but on some tiles it will never be possible to declare that area and if i let the roof collapse and remove the debris it just collapses again presumably forever since i tried removing it 15 times and it still collapsed. If it s an overhead mountain collapsing colonists will be buried alive.

Although this time is the same for all materials the amount per cycle varies. So i then took some guys and mined the collapsed roof at which point they each died as they finished their square. Each extraction cycle takes a base of 14 000 ticks 3 89 mins of work to finish modified according to the colonist s mining speed stat. A quick and cheap structure to store materials and food can be made with a 9x9 roof and a wooden or steel wall in the middle.

A roof collapses if there s no support rock wall within 6 squares of the tile. Use the regular remove roof area option found in the architect zone area menu to draw an orange area above the roof you want to remove.
